Belfast Mural Artist to take up Creative Residency at Swarthmore College

Lee Smithey secured funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to bring Belfast muralist, Dee Craig, to Swarthmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr Colleges for a one-month residency in October and November 2013.  The residency will feature a photo exhibit of Craig's mural work, class visits, and the creation of three murals on Swarthmore's campus and in the city of Philadelphia. The first preliminary analysis of Mural Mapping Project data was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association meetings in New York in August 2013:

"Explaining the Persistence of Paramilitary Public Symbolic Displays in Northern Ireland: Preliminary Content and Geospatial Analyses" by Lee A. Smithey, Gregory M. Maney, and Josh Satre.

The third survey for the Mural Mapping Project is underway! Lee has been on research leave since December 2011 and he is mapping murals, memorials and other forms of public art, mostly during June and July.  You can follow his progress here.
